Heres a sample anim of a technique I used with ripple displacements on a subdivided sphere, then turning off all visibility for the object, and apply hypervoxels sprite shading, you simply add tiny tin hv sprites on to each vertice, and I could balance density by increasing subdivision levels, this technique had disadvantages as to when it displaces to much, the spacing between the vertices causes gaps in the density

Just pack, roll, and seal its that easy
